Terms of use

Effective 10 October 2026.

About these terms

These terms apply when you use the Homestead app or this website. Homestead is provided by Josh Thackeray, a sole trader in the UK, trading as Homestead (“we”, “us”). You can contact us at hello@joinhomestead.co.uk; our postal address is available on request. By creating an account you agree to these terms.

Who can use Homestead

  • You must be 16 or over.
  • Homestead is for the community you live in. Give your real name and your real home address. Using someone else’s details, or an address where you don’t live, isn’t allowed.
  • One account per person.
  • Some features are only for adults: residents aged 16 and 17 don’t appear in the People directory and can’t offer local work.

Being a good neighbour

Homestead works because people treat each other well. When you use it, please don’t:

  • harass, bully, threaten or intimidate anyone;
  • post anything hateful or discriminatory;
  • share someone else’s personal information, including where they live, without their permission;
  • post anything illegal, sexually explicit or violent;
  • spam, advertise repeatedly or mislead people;
  • pretend to be someone else.

Group managers can set expectations for their groups and remove posts that don’t fit, as long as they follow these terms too.

Reporting and moderation

You can report posts, comments, groups and people, and block anyone you’d rather not see. Homestead’s moderators review reports and may remove content, or restrict or suspend accounts that break these terms.

If we remove something you posted or suspend your account and you think we got it wrong, email hello@joinhomestead.co.uk within 30 days and tell us why. Someone who wasn’t involved in the original decision will review it and tell you the outcome.

Your content

You own what you post. By posting it, you give Homestead permission to store it and show it to the people it’s meant for (your community, or your group’s members) for as long as it’s on Homestead. You can edit or delete your posts and comments at any time.

You’re responsible for what you post. Don’t post anything you don’t have the right to share.

Your account

You can delete your account at any time from the app. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms or put others at risk.

The service

Homestead is free for residents. We’re improving it all the time, and features may change. We’ll try to keep it running smoothly, but we can’t promise it will always be available or free of errors.

Homestead connects neighbours, but we aren’t responsible for what residents say or do, on Homestead or off it, including any arrangement you make with someone you met through it, such as local work. Use your judgement as you would with anyone you’ve just met.

Our responsibility to you

Nothing in these terms limits our liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud. You also have legal rights as a consumer that these terms don’t affect.

Otherwise, because Homestead is provided free of charge, we’re not responsible for losses that weren’t foreseeable, or for any business losses.

Changes to these terms

If we make important changes, we’ll tell you in the app before they take effect.

The law that applies

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your own courts.
